The Association has noted the findings of a study by Public Health Scotland and the University of Sheffield into the effectiveness of MUP in Scotland (see here)
CSNA has never opposed the introduction, on principle, of MUP but have always been fiercely resistant to the implementation of the scheme if it were not to be similarly introduced in the North of Ireland.
We would be very concerned that the current political stalemate, coupled with the undoubted additional fiscal and trading benefits that both the Northern Exchequer and retailers are experiencing will make the timing of a pricing alignment a forlorn hope; we have once again managed to shoot ourselves in the foot!
